So while I've heard both originals before they are just vaguely familiar, so I guess it's easier for me to appreciate both renditions of the two songs. But I can definitely relate to not caring what some artists do with covers of songs I am very familiar with.

My folks didn't have any music either, not even a radio, but we did watch Ed Sullivan and some of the country shows that came on on Saturdays, like The Porter Waggoner Show. I was always drawn to it, and I like a variety of stuff, but most "modern" stuff is crap.

Apparently playing a piano on a small floating raft is much more popular than I had previously realized.

An old friend of my Dad's used to sing this. I've looked for many years for a good version of it and finally found one I like. Here it is.

I do admire what they've been doing, but Tennessee Ernie Ford is THE man for that song.

He's definitely good and probably the guy my Dad's friend heard it from. My Dad's friend had a voice probably a bit lower than the guy from Southern raised so that's the way I was used to it being song. One of those cases of liking it more the way I heard it first.

That's funny. I don't remember what famous person said it but he said he'd never work with kids or animals because they would always steel the show.
