Honing a Rapide Wedge - Tony'schin - 09-24-2021 OK all, I want to give my Rapide blade a new edge and was wondering if there were any tips I need to know. Ie. Do I hone with the stropping attachment or just put tape on the spine? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Tony RE: Honing a Rapide Wedge - Dave in KY - 09-24-2021 (09-24-2021, 08:43 PM)Tony'schin Wrote: OK all, I want to give my Rapide blade a new edge and was wondering if there were any tips I need to know. Will be following this. RE: Honing a Rapide Wedge - Tony'schin - 09-24-2021 (09-24-2021, 08:49 PM)Dave in KY Wrote: Tony, I'm no help but assume you do the same as a Rolls Wedge. Yeah, I was thinking I could do the same as the Rolls, just check the hone marks each couple of strokes against the old bevel, once matched off I go. I only have one blade though so hope I don't wreck it. T RE: Honing a Rapide Wedge - RobinK - 09-25-2021 There are quite a few threads on the predecessor of this forum, e.g. this one here: https://theoriginalsafetytoo.proboards.com/thread/3874/heljestrand-expect Generally speaking, when dealing with wedge blades, tape is very useful. And if you do not have a bayonet, yet, I would like to recommend that you find one first. As an aside, these should be trivial to 3d print, so maybe someone can make one? Either way, here is a bayonet: And be careful with the Heljestrand labelled blades on eBay and other fora. A friend of mine kindly bought the last good ones in Eskilstuna years ago (and, no, I have no spare ones any more because I sold them to members here at cost). And yes, that Allegro is the easiest and fastest way to maintain a wedge. That said, once you've set the bevel, a balsa strop (or, rather, hone) can help you maintain a properly honed wedge blade for a very long time. I will have a look at the threads posted when i get time. The Rapide blade is working just fine at present. |
