Timex watch repair - kyle3rv2 - 02-12-2022 Felt inspired to work on Timex watches again today. I haven't for a while. I only mess with old hand wind and automatic Timex and battery and hand fixes on quartz as well as strap changes. Anyway I've had a cool 1972 funky Timex I got from Poland on Etsy. It looked good condition but didn't run. I got it after waiting a month or two for it to come to Ohio. Well I looked at it someone messed with it that didn't know what they were doing. The crown was in wrong and the hour hand was upside down. Not big deals but hadn't felt like messing with until now. Got it torn down and found out someone messed with the balance wheel and the pallet fork wasn't moving to transfer power from the mainspring. The pallet fork seemed stuck even after cleaning moving the spring barrel by hand didn't free it. I took a closer look saw the avalanche was too loose but it looked ok otherwise. I loosened more and pushed the pallet fork a couple times to try and free it and it moved. Then I wiggled the balance wheel to reengage it and tightened it back down. It's currently running in a lighter fluid rinse. After it's soak it just needs oiled and assembled and we will see how she tells time. Poor old girl. RE: Timex watch repair - Whiterook - 02-12-2022 I used to collect pocket watches, but I could never repair them myself. I am way too clumsy for all those tiny bits and bobs. You have a nice hobby there! RE: Timex watch repair - Jayaruh - 02-12-2022 (02-12-2022, 05:13 PM)kyle3rv2 Wrote: After it's soak it just needs oiled and assembled and we will see how she tells time. Poor old girl. That's cool. I am hoping that she runs... Poor old girl. Yep it's running. Should stay that way hopefully. Don't know yet how well it will keep time normally they still work fine. Just have to watch how long you ultrasonic clean or the joints will wear and they will be forever way too fast. RE: Timex watch repair - kyle3rv2 - 02-13-2022 Watch is reassembled and running. Now to see if keeps running and keeps time. RE: Timex watch repair - Dave in KY - 02-13-2022 Very cool skills to have RE: Timex watch repair - kyle3rv2 - 02-13-2022 Running strong gaining only 80 seconds per day. RE: Timex watch repair - GAW9576 - 02-13-2022 That's a cool looking watch. I hope it keeps good time. I have several automatic and hand wind watches Vostok watches that need repair. I hope to eventually learn how to repair them and acquire the necessary tools. I'd like to get one or two repaired in the meantime. I took it swimming and in waist deep water with the crown tight it took on water. So if I'm ever going to take a watch of any noticable price in the water again I'll get it pressure tested first. Vostoks was cool about it though replaced it free and I think the warranty was already expired. I haven't tried working on anything more complex than Timex yet though. The Timex watches are very simple and intended to be serviceable by the average person Timex even gave instructions to the public on how to do a service on them. RE: Timex watch repair - kyle3rv2 - 02-13-2022 Put a band on and did a quick crystal polish. |
