I want to thank everyone for posting their SE SOTDs this month! It was a great month for me to start shaving with SE razors and y'all motivated me to keep going. While nowhere near Dave in KY, today was my 12th shave in a row and seventh in a row only using a SE razor.
You'll notice that my ER 1914 has a bit of steampunk look about it. There are before pictures on the September Haul thread HERE if you want to click over and take a look. It was the way worse off of the four razors. As I cleaned it, I came to realize that there was not going to be any surviving plating on the top cap, so I pulled out some Bar Keepers Friend and took it all the way down to brass. Now there is kind of a tri-color look with the back retaining it's plating and the handle looking like a patina'd silver.
Standard 2.5 pass shave. Another very comfortable, efficient shaver! I had a REAL good shave going after two passes and got greedy on the pickups. No weepers, just a little irritation. I need to learn my lesson! Will I ever learn my lesson???
While shaving I noticed that my blade would come out of alignment and no matter what I did I couldn't keep the one side to stay down (right side when looking at below photos). It didn't seem to cause me any problems with the shave. I did notice that there is a natural curve in the top cap so that when it is closed on the blade and you look at it head on, the middle of the cap is not on the blade. If others with a ER 1914 can see if theirs is the same? Any thoughts on how I might correct for this? Thanks!
Before Shaving
After Shaving (note right side is shifted up from the blade stop)
The blade alignment issue is do to the spring that pushes the blade forward when the top cap closes needing to be adjusted. Here is a picture of your razor from the September Haul thread. I added arrows to show what I'm talking about.
I think the razor looks very cool with the brass top. And congrats on the improving shaves.
