October 2021 Haul
#1
The mailwoman just started October off on the right foot!

When I first started researching SE razors, I ran across a few posts talking about a Gem travel razor they referred to as a "squat head". The conversations intrigued me and I've been on the look out ever since. Got this off Ebay for under $17 including shipping/tax. The razor looks to have little use and near pristine plating. The spring is so tight and/or because of the squat head, it has to be held open. I like the design of the case and the design/raised GEM lettering on the case. I'm guessing it is brass and when I clean up the razor in soapy water, I'll do the case as well. Really a tiny, cute razor! HERE is a link to one of the conversations about the squat head Gem, which included our friend TobyC.

They are super cool razors. Congratulations on the great acquisition. That dose look to be in excellent condition. I have 2 different versions of them. I will have to look again to confirm but I the print on the box differs one being the GEM like yours a d I believe the other being a sort of basket weave pattern. The other difference if memory serves is on razor has a flater top cap and the other is curved. From. What I understand there is another squat head Gem called the minute man that is a more aggressive razor and came in a wall hanger set that I think is referred to as a bathroom set.

OK here is a picture from a shave comparison I did on June 25th
It's hard to tell in the picture but I remembered correctly that one has a curved top cap and the other is flat.

Thanks for the photos GAW9576, you have two beautiful specimens! It looks like my top cap is slightly curved, like the one on the left. It is a subtle curve and it was hard to be sure at first, but when I compared it to my GEM 1912 Baton and Damaskeene which are flat...it was easy to see the curving. Can you open the caps on yours and they stay open? A surprisingly heavy razor for the size.

I say "femailman".  Big Grin

Love those boxes!

You should not have to hold it open, I had a '12 doing that, but the top had been bent down slightly. With one hand I held the handle and pushed up on the front of the head with my thumb, just a little bend, and now it works properly. I don't know if yours has that same problem or not, and any bending will have to be at your own risk.

Those are my favorite handles!

.
Boar brushes, brass razors, and hard pucks ARE traditional wet shaving. Everything else is modern day fluff for the girly men.

Thanks for the at-my-own-risk advice! I'll wait until after I've cleaned/sanitized and shaved with the razor to see if I want to try to adjust. It seems only a minor convenience if I have to hold open the cap to insert/extract the blade. Yeah, the box was a real eye-turner when I saw the listing!

I'll have to check later if it was those razors that had to be held open. I know for sure I have at least one razor that's like that though.

I really like these handles too. Oddly these squat head razors and handles don't interchange with regular 1912s they do however interchange with lather catchers.
