Micromatic
#1
I know I'm not the only who has one of these -- actually more than one, as you can see -- and I definitely KNOW I'm far from the only one who absolutely loves the way these razors shave.  While some call them the Micromatic Open Comb (or MMOC), GEM just called them Micromatics, and that's how we typically refer to them here.  I recently had a Micromatic Monday shave with 2 Micromatics:  the 1930-1932 base plate version without the bumps, and the 1932-1941 base plate with bumps.

How about you?  Are you a Micromatic user -- what are your thoughts on this beauty?

It's been a VERY long time since I used anything other than a Clog Pruf. One of that family as you know.

I, too, like the MMs. I have the OC, the CP, and the FW models. I like them all. I have been a LOSER for a long time, but I do like razors of all flavors, too.

Well, you got me thinking, so I dug through my stuff and found seven MMs. Two MMOC, two MMCP, and three MMBT (Flying Wing). All but the last one has a case. I found the last one about a year ago in Rhode Island when I needed a shaver because my Schick H had a bad blade in it and I could not find any injector blades anywhere. So I found the plastic bullet MM in an antique shop and was able to get some SE blades.

Beautiful collection.  I've got a Clog-Pruf and Flying Wing as well.  It's funny, when I created this thread I had envisioned making a thread for each Micromatic, this one was just going to be for the "open comb"; but since we at TOST prefer to call the MMOC just "Micromatic", that's what I called the thread.  Anyway, no biggie at all -- this can definitely be the place for all Micromatics.   Smile

I'll post some of my other Micromatics later, along with some comments on my perceived differences in how they shave.  I know we have TOS and TOST as reference material holders for folks, but I figure a newbie who is looking for info on razors would probably look here first.

I went on a search to find an MM without "bumps." They are hard to find and when I do, the ones I found are not in good condition or are too expensive for me. I hope to find one eventually that I can add to my collection. Oh, for the record, I weighed my MMBTs and found that the plastic tip one is 55g while the metal tip one is 68g. Interesting.

Interesting about that weight difference -- hard to believe the metal tip alone brings it up 13 grams....or maybe it's not so hard to believe, that is just shy of a half of an ounce.  But I do wonder if the tip is the only difference or if the internal mechanisms have a little difference between them as well.

In terms of the "bumpless" Micromatic, I just stumbled on to mine....it came in with a razor lot that had another GEM I was targeting (can't even remember what that razor was now).  It wasn't until later that I learned of the differences and I was happy to learn that I have one.  I've got to say, I just cannot tell a difference at all in the shaves between the older ("'bumpless") and the younger "bumped" models.

Love all of them. The MM is a favorite though. With or with out bumps.
Happy shaves to ya!

The MMs are among my few top fav's, but not my bestest fav'. My favorite is still the shovelhead. But due to me not shaving everyday it clogs, hence the ClogPruf use. It is appropriately named. Plus it's a really good shaver.

I cannot detect any difference of shave with either bumps or no bumps, just that no bumps came first.
