Shovelhead Question

How are these different than other 1912's or are they? I know the loading drill is different but how, or does it, change the way the razor works/shaves?

The top opens forward with the hinge point very near the front edge for one. Also I believe I saw a picture of an original instruction sheet that recommend a different shaving angel with the top cap off the skin a bit instead of riding the cap. I find them to be a bit more aggressive than most 1912s but really like the ones I have.
There are also several variants.
It's no different from the recommended shaving angle of a 1912 or 1914

I don't think the shave is as good as most other ASR razors. YMMV.

To me, it shaves a little different but gets the same results. I would not say it was an improvement though.

I don't even think about it when I shave with a 1924 vs. anything else.
I agree that it is a slightly more aggressive razor, but it's easy to use and gets the job done just as well with no issues. I've always enjoyed using a 1924, I guess that's why I have 5 or 6 examples in my collection. In fact when we looked at our current house before buying it I saw it as a decent looking blue. After closing and taking ownership and getting ready to move in I couldn't believe it when I realized it was actually an ugly tan color. Go figure. I really think it was the house we were supposed to get though and it was necessary for me to see it that way. We still laugh about it.

Love both the 1912 and 1924. They take more strokes to get the job done, but eventually get there.
I love the "scrapping the burnt toast" sound to the shave. Would make excellent ASMR shave videos. I took one GEM PTFE blade to almost 35 shaves in one 1924 shovelhead. I still have the balde loaded in one of my shovelheads. Short deliberate strokes work best at a neutral shave angle. |
