(When I can’t match Jayaruh I will repeat the shave of the day before.) The early blades from about 1908 up until WW1 (maybe later in 1919 with the big mergers) were all solid rectangles like these ER blades. Gem,Star, ER, everybody used them. Then it was American Safety Razor themselves that developed a blade that would keep their various razor lines competing against themselves. They created a cutout blade specifically so ER razors wouldn’t take them. ER wrangled that angle too. You can see in the instruction sheet they say other blades won’t fit their razors - they were referring to the new cutouts which pretty much everyone else started to use. ASR was successfully sued big time in the 1920s for essentially swindling folks with advertising claiming each of the razor lines was better than the other They had let the consumers land wherever they thought best. But each customer decision brought them back to ASR - they just didn’t realize. Early American ingenuity I suppose! Rather than scotch tape I use a piece of plastic cut from a trading card protector sleeve and just slide it in with the blade. They last a long time. If you look closely you can see it mounted on the blade. 1924 eh? Well I can do that! I really enjoyed the 1924 razor today. It has a very audible sound some describe as scraping toast. ER touted it as the ‘Singing Shave’ starting in the late 1920s when they introduced the chain link handle to the 1924 model. Brought my trusty Schick instead, along with minimal amounts of the Борода (Ukrainian for "beard") kit. It's a beautiful summer day in Kyiv. If it were not for the odd air alert, you might think you're in any other large city in the civilised world. Oh, that, and the odd enemy tank or rocket repurposed as a pot for planting sunflowers. ? Your travels sure do bring you to places! I imagine you now more as an Arnie Schwarzenegger type, and certainly no travelling dandy. Be safe, take care and Happy Shaving. And, that Boroda gear is quite interesting! For the bearded fella they have everything. Their concrete soap dishes are very cool too! I love the way the one drains out. Very clever. Take care. RE: SOTD - SEptember 2025 - Rocketman - 09-05-2025 SEptember!!! A terrific pick by Jayaruh today. The GEM Damaskeene is one of my favourites. (I guess there aren’t any antique/vintage SEs I don’t like!) GEM Damaskeene with GEM PTFE, an awesome Thater badger I received through the kindness of the above poster - RobinK - thanks over and over Robin - and a big jar of SMASH to salute the Ukranian Flag!!
