This last week I shaved quite a bit with the Type J (new to me) and alternated with a Hydro-magic (released per Dummies Guide in the same time frame). The Hydro-magic is a magic razor for me
What I found is that I prefer other injectors to the J. For whatever reason, this razor seems more aggressive to me. At least, my face feels irritated after I use it. I think I will PIF this razor to a good home. I tried selling it most of last Fall, since I thought I didn't need a razor that may duplicate my Type I but not have the lever. Therefore, if you are reading this and would like a Type J, PM me and it's yours! I'll even load a fresh blade and give it a Barbicide dip!
In any event, a cold-water splash and Thayer's witch hazel made everything right!

I don't what to say here. I like my Js and consider them to be just a tiny bit milder than the G type. I think they are the last of the classic Schick injectors. The type L and later were more modern in styling and less elegant to my eye.

Something that comes to mind is the possibility that your particular J is damaged in some way. Injectors rely on the bends to be the right shape for the clamping force and blade exposure to be correct. The head can get bent out of alignment fairly easily if they are mistreated and that can cause difficulty in loading blades along with poor shaves. I have several G types and one of them is definitely more difficult to load and is not as good a shave for me. If I look at the heads, the shape near where the two pieces of bent metal meet are ever so slightly different. It's not something you're likely to notice unless you are comparing two of the same razor. I don't think there's any way I could bend them back into the correct shape so it's more or less a dead razor. All this is to say that you may want to try a "known good" J from someone to see if that is possibly true in your case.

Good point and one that I hadn't considered. I really, really want an amber handled Type G, but the one I bought last year was too aggressive, and duplicated the cream handled Type G I had already, so I sold it. I should try another amber handled G and see if the one I had was an oddball! Thanks for the tip. Us Erics gotta hang tight!

I suggest you consider keeping some of these around for awhile. You may find that you like them after your technique evolves over time. I find that razors that gave me irritation and blade feel a few years ago no longer do so and I am able to gradually open up the settings on my adjustables.

MaineYooper I have a J golden 500 with the Hydro-magic lever and an i Hydro-magic . They both seem to shave fairly similar to me except for the handle length. So if you like the longer handle trying one that a member has that they say is not to aggressive as srqshaver suggests may be a good idea. Like he said yours could be tweaked a little bit. Or possibly just a different variation. I know the Ls had many variations that had different shave characteristics. I personally like an aggressive razor sometimes. So I like having the variety. It may be as Whiterook suggests worth hanging onto and revisiting the razor in question. But if no one else is interested and you are set on finding it a good home I would be happy to take it in. And srqshaver if you still have the Dead G I could take a look at it. I rehabbed my severely bent type I Hydro-magic.

I have never really gotten along with the J myself. I can get a good issue free shave with mine I just don't find it to be a favorite. Same with the N actually.
Happy shaves to ya!

The handle length is a bit awkward at times on both. Oddly I love my Henckels Rapide with it's long handle. Although the head angle may just be different enough to make it work out better on the Rapide.

I agree with my good, long time friend, Greg.
My best Schick injector is the E, but the beauty of the Golden 500 made me want to add to my Schick collection. Plus, being able to open easily makes cleaning a breeze/.
